Portrait Perfection: Expert Tips and Advice Straight from a Photographer

Take a deep breath and relax; there’s no need to stress. You should enjoy the process of getting your portrait or headshot taken.  Here is some advice from me, an expert photographer, that will really make a difference when it comes to results.

Bring whatever reflects you and showcases your personality. You don’t need pricey attire or extravagant accessories unless that’s your vibe. Just go with what feels authentic and comfortable, allowing me to capture your true essence without any distractions.

Steer clear of alcohol the night before the shoot and ensure you get a good night’s sleep.  Fit in a workout before the session to feel both energetic and confident. Stay on course and be ready for the shoot. Try on your outfits ahead of time to make any necessary tweaks and iron it the night before.

Advice for the girls:

If possible, have your hair done professionally. This can be very beneficial, but make sure to get it styled in a similar way to how you wear it daily. You want to look like yourself. Wearing makeup can enhance your photos, but make sure it is evenly applied.  Keep it like what you would normally wear so you look like yourself. Remember, we can always retouch the photos afterwards to conceal any blemishes.

Get plenty of rest the night before your session and avoid facial treatments, waxing, and masks the day before.  It’s a good idea to moisturise your skin leading up to your session to keep it looking great. In fact, stick to your daily skincare routine and avoid using new products right before your photos. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your session for amazing-looking skin.

Choose plain colours for your clothing. Patterns can be too busy and distracting for a headshot photo.  However, avoid flesh tones, beige, peach, browns, or yellows as they can blend your face and arms into your outfit. The best colour choices are in the mid-tone range. Purples, blues, and greens can be flattering. Black and grey are also safe choices. Wear well-fitted clothing that is neither too tight nor too loose and avoid low-cut tops and make sure undergarments are not visible.

Relax and have fun during the session. Genuine smiles come when you are relaxed.

Advice for the boys:

To start with, wear well-fitted clothing that is neither too tight nor too loose.  Long sleeves are better for headshots than short sleeves. Choose solid colours rather than patterns for coat jackets, dress shirts, and polo shirts. If this is a professional headshot, wear appropriate attire that relates to your field. If it is common for men in your profession to wear a tie, make sure to wear one.

If you regularly shave your head, continue to do so on the day of your session. If you shave every few days, we recommend avoiding a fresh shave on the day of the shoot. Wait a couple of days for a more natural look.  If you plan to get a haircut, do it a few days before the shoot to allow the hair to grow back and look more natural without fresh cut lines.  Make sure your hair is freshly clean, but not more than two days since your last shampoo. Use the hair products you normally use, including conditioner and styling products.

If you shave every day, continue to do so and shave on the day of your photo session. Keep your look well-groomed and professional, you will be glad you did once you see the results.  Pay attention to nose hair, ear hair, and untrimmed eyebrows. These areas might not be your favourite to address, but they are important for a polished appearance. Avoid using new facial or shaving products that you haven’t tried before. You don’t want any surprise reactions right before your headshot session.

Adhere to these tips, and you’ll end up with headshots that authentically represent you, exuding a professional vibe. You’ll not only look and feel fantastic on the day but also be thrilled with the outcome of your photoshoot.
