Stand Out Shots: Portrait Photography in Unique and Unusual Places
As an experienced portrait photographer, I’ve always been captivated by the endless possibilities that different locations can offer. While traditional studios provide controlled environments and predictable outcomes, stepping into unusual and unique locations brings a whole new dimension to portrait photography.
I want to share some examples of unconventional spots that could make your portraits truly stand out. Perhaps you will be inspired to join me in an adventure for your next portrait.
The Charm of Abandoned Buildings
Abandoned buildings can be a good choice for creating standout portraits. The contrast of decaying structures with the vibrancy of my subjects creates a visually compelling narrative. The textures of peeling paint, broken windows, and rusted metal provide a gritty backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the polished appearance of the person being photographed. My photo shoot with Eve Stafford Soprano last year was a perfect example of this. While not exactly abandoned, the location was an empty industrial space that worked really well.
The Serenity of a Garden
For those seeking a more serene and lush environment, established formal gardens are an excellent choice. The vibrant colours and diverse plant life can offer a multitude of natural backdrops. The way light filters through the leaves and the variety of textures and patterns available can enhance the overall composition of your portraits. By taking advantage of the early morning light, dew-kissed flowers and tranquil ponds can add a dreamy quality to the photos.
The Quirkiness of Urban Art Districts
These areas are in most cities and towns, with their vibrant street art and eclectic vibes, they are perfect for those looking to add a pop of colour and a modern edge to their portraits. Graffiti walls, murals, and urban installations provide dynamic backgrounds that can inject a sense of fun and creativity into your photos. Colourful artistic environments can bring out a playful and expressive side of my subject, resulting in portraits that will be full of character and energy.
The Mystique of Forests and Woodlands
Forests and woodlands offer a sense of mystique and natural beauty that is hard to replicate in a studio. The interplay of light and shadow, the variety of flora, and the natural tranquillity of these environments can create ethereal and timeless portraits.
The way the sunlight filters through the trees, casting dappled shadows and highlighting the lush greenery, creates a magical atmosphere. A recent client photo shoot with a Pilates teacher Chloe Lupin captured in nature encompassed this perfectly.
Preparing for Shooting in Unusual Locations
As an experienced photographer I will always visit the location beforehand to understand the lighting, space, and potential challenges you might face during the shoot. I will also bring along extra equipment, such as reflectors, portable lighting, and weather protection, to adapt to changing conditions. Of course I will ensure we have the necessary permissions to shoot, especially in private or restricted areas.
Experimenting with unique and unusual locations can elevate your portrait photography to new heights. These environments offer a wealth of opportunities to create memorable, standout images that go beyond the ordinary. So, the next time you’re planning a portrait session, think outside the studio and explore the endless possibilities that unconventional locations have to offer. I’m always just a phone call away if you want to chat about any ideas you may have for that perfect location.
