Tips for the Perfect Session

Modern families come in all shapes and sizes. Skilled photographer knows how to capture the essence of what makes your family special.

Pick the Perfect Time of Day

For the most flattering outdoor family photos, try to snap your shots during the golden hour—right after sunrise or just before sunset. This soft, warm light works wonders by minimising harsh shadows and creating a gorgeous glow that will have your photos shining. Scheduling your session during these magical times will give your pictures that naturally radiant touch!

Add Personal Touches with Props

Bring along a few fun props that showcase your family’s personality—think cosy blankets, a picnic basket, or the kids’ favourite toys. These little additions not only spice up your photos but also help capture those authentic interactions, making your pictures feel uniquely you!

Let Kids Be Themselves

Some of the best family photos happen at the moment! Let your kids run, play and explore for genuine smiles and excitement that really bring your photos to life. Encourage natural interactions instead of stiff poses. And don’t worry if they can’t sit still—sometimes the most memorable shots are those wonderful candid moments!

Be Ready for Anything

Outdoor photo shoots can be a bit unpredictable, so it’s smart to be prepared for weather surprises or location changes. Bring extra layers, waterproof blankets, or even an umbrella for an unexpected rain-themed shoot! Rolling with the punches can lead to some truly unique and unforgettable pictures!

Time flies but capturing precious family moments in a photo makes those memories last forever. You probably sometimes look back at old photos of your family and remember how your parents made you pose perfectly for a photo. How you were not in the mood for taking photos. You were all about throwing a tantrum and not wanting to be there. I know, I have those memories. In my professional work, I aspire to create a different atmosphere while witnessing your family bond. My goal is for you to engage in your everyday conversations, have a relaxed and fun vibe and not pay much attention to me being there. That way I can really see your natural expressions, and capture the personality and passion of your children through my lens. You being undisturbed and unposed is what makes your family unique and I’m all about allowing you to be yourself during the session.

As always: Timing is everything! The best time to take your photos is within 1-2 hours of sunrise or sunset. That’s the famous Golden Hour! However, we’re in Ireland so it can be a challenge to guess and plan far ahead for sunny days. Doesn’t mean we can’t try our best!

With these tips in mind, your outdoor family photo shoot is sure to be a fun and joyful experience, ending with a collection of beautiful images that tell your family’s special story!

Ideas for the Best Poses Natural Shots

Classic Standing Family Photos

One of the most timeless and essential poses for any outdoor family photo shoot is the standing family portrait. It’s simple yet powerful: the whole family standing together, looking directly at the camera, showcasing unity and connection. If your kids are older, they can stand alongside mom and dad, or for younger children, parents can hold them for that extra close-knit feel. This classic pose is a must-have in any family shoot, creating the perfect snapshot of your family at this special moment in time.

Cosy Sitting Family Photos

Another favourite pose for an outdoor family photo shoot is having everyone sit down. Whether it’s on a cosy blanket spread on the grass, sandy beach, or a scenic walkway, sitting family pictures create a more relaxed, intimate vibe. I always bring along a blanket, so everyone can take a moment to sit, relax, and naturally enjoy the moment. Sometimes, a nearby bench, log, or large rock adds a charming touch, creating a picture-perfect setting for those natural smiles and warm family cuddles.

Walking Shots: Capturing Movement and Connection

A signature shot I love for every outdoor family photo shoot is the walking pose—simple, yet filled with emotion. I usually ask the family to hold hands and walk either towards or away from the camera, which always results in beautifully candid moments. Whether they’re looking at the camera, glancing at each other, or just enjoying the surroundings, this pose naturally captures the bond between family members. The movement adds a dynamic element, making these photos feel authentic and alive.

Sweet Hugs and Kisses

What better way to showcase family love than with a few hugs and kisses portraits? This playful pose is always a hit during an outdoor family photo shoot. I love capturing those sweet, genuine moments when parents share a kiss or cuddle their little ones. It’s all about highlighting the affection and joy within your family, and these poses often become some of the most cherished shots of the day.

Fun Family Interactions and Playful Moments

Last, but certainly not least, are the playful, unposed moments. For me, some of the best shots during an outdoor family photo shoot happen when the family is just having fun together. Whether it’s lifting a child up to “fly” through the air, tossing leaves, or simply watching the kids run free while parents share a smile in the background, these moments capture the true joy of family life. The candid nature of these shots gives them a unique charm, often resulting in the most genuine and memorable photos.

And there you have it—my top must-have poses for any outdoor family photo shoot . If you’re ready to capture beautiful memories with your loved ones, I’d love to help you create a stunning collection of family photos that you’ll treasure forever!

What to Wear & How to Prepare for Outdoor Family Photo Shoot

You must already be searching for “perfect outfit for family photos”. Please don’t. You don’t need to go overboard, buy new matching clothes for your entire family to be “picture perfect”. If you wish to have a coordinated look, you can choose similar colours or a palette that goes well together. Earthy tones are fantastic for a woodland backdrop, while blues and whites are just perfect for beach scenes. This way, your family will look coordinated yet relaxed and natural! There is no need to feel pressured and make everyone wear the same exact item to look cohesive. I found in my work that such unusual clothes usually tends to annoy children and make them feel uncomfortable. That shows during the session in their visible discomfort. My honest advice is to always choose comfort first and to wear something that you normally wear. Something that is authentic for all of you. Example: If you let your child choose his favourite t-shirt to wear, he will get excited to show it off and take photos. You can bring items that are important in your child’s life: like a toy, book, bike and we can use that during the session. If you want to do your hairstyles to look neat, that’s recommended. However, don’t put off your session due to any blemishes, scratches, bruises etc. Life happens to all of us and if needed I can edit all those little things in the end to enhance your best assets.

Top Locations for Stunning Outdoor Family Photo Shoot in Limerick

When selecting locations for outdoor family photo shoots in Limerick, there are several options to consider:

Scenic Beauty Along theCurraghchase

If you’re looking for a serene yet striking location for an outdoor family photo shoot, the Clare Glens offers a breathtaking setting that perfectly blends lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and the charm of Ireland’s countryside. Flowing through a dense forest nestled in a red sandstone gorge, the crystal-clear waters of this picturesque river create a tranquil atmosphere ideal for capturing intimate family moments. Imagine your family gathered by the edge of the river, surrounded by vibrant foliage, or playfully posing on one of the rustic bridges that span across the gorge—every spot along the trail offers an opportunity to take stunning, nature-filled photos.

The Clare River’s loop walk is dotted with numerous small waterfalls that flow gracefully through the sandstone, adding a magical touch to the scene. These natural cascades create a dynamic backdrop for both candid and posed shots, whether it’s the kids skipping stones across the water or the entire family leaning against the gorge’s beautiful red rock formations. The area is especially captivating during the fall, when the foliage turns to brilliant shades of gold, amber, and crimson, making it a perfect spot for seasonal family portraits.

Additionally, this trail has a unique feature: the Clare River marks the border between County Tipperary and County Limerick. This means that each time your family crosses one of the charming bridges along the path, you’re not just moving from one scenic spot to another—you’re also stepping between two counties! This fun fact can be incorporated into your shoot to create a memorable story behind your photos, showcasing your family’s sense of adventure and exploration.

With its picturesque riverbanks, forested trails, and enchanting waterfalls, the Clare Glens provides a diverse and photogenic setting that will make your family’s outdoor photo shoot truly special. Whether you’re looking to capture playful moments or elegant group shots, this location is a hidden gem that offers endless possibilities for creating beautiful, nature-inspired family memories.

Opened in 1877 in memory of local businessman Richard Russell, this beautifully landscaped park is a true gem that offers a blend of charming features and lush greenery, making it an ideal backdrop for capturing timeless family memories. With its extensive variety of mature deciduous and evergreen trees—ranging from majestic Oaks and Maples to colourful Flowering Cherries and Crab Apples—the park provides rich natural textures and colours that will enhance any family portrait.

The People’s Park is filled with photogenic landmarks that add character and uniqueness to your photos. From the refurbished Victorian drinking fountain and the quaint bandstand to the picturesque park shelters, there’s no shortage of delightful spots to choose from. Families with younger children will love the playful shots that can be taken at the children’s playground, designed for toddlers up to 10 years old. Capture candid moments of joy as the kids explore the play area, or gather the whole family for a classic portrait near the vibrant flower beds, which bloom brilliantly in the summer months.

Additionally, the Limerick City Gallery of Art is located within the park, offering an elegant backdrop for more sophisticated family photos. The juxtaposition of manicured gardens against the historic architecture of the gallery creates a timeless setting that’s perfect for capturing both posed group shots and spontaneous interactions. The park’s well-maintained paths and spacious lawns also provide the perfect opportunity for playful, candid photos—whether it’s a family stroll under the shade of mature trees, a game of catch, or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon together.

With its variety of scenic spots, colourful flora, and historic charm, the People’s Park is more than just a green space—it’s a visual treasure trove for family photography.
